Your resume tells people what I have done in the past. A portfolio shows I can actually do the work.
In 2026, that difference matters more than ever. Most candidates send a CV and stop there. Then they wonder why they blend into a pile of 300 applications. The problem is simple. A CV is easy to ignore. A strong FP&A portfolio is not.
If I want to stand out for FP&A roles, I need proof of execution. I need to show that I can build models, manage cash, present budgets, create dashboards, and think analytically. That is what makes an application memorable.
When I review strong portfolios, I keep seeing the same handful of projects. These are not random exercises. They are practical pieces of work that signal real FP&A ability.
Why an FP&A portfolio matters more than ever
Most finance professionals assume their experience section will do the heavy lifting. It usually does not. A hiring manager can read ten CVs in a row and see the same phrases repeated again and again:
- Supported budgeting and forecasting
- Worked on variance analysis
- Assisted with management reporting
- Built financial models
The issue is not that these claims are wrong. The issue is that everyone says them. A portfolio turns those claims into evidence.

Instead of saying I can build a model, I show one. Instead of saying I understand business performance, I present an analysis. Instead of claiming I can support leadership, I include a budget deck built the way an actual leadership team would expect to see it.
That shift from description to demonstration is what gets attention.
Project 1: Build a financial model
This is the foundation of an FP&A portfolio.
The model can take one of two forms:
- A full three statement financial model
- A driver based revenue or cost model
Either approach works. What matters is that the project proves I can actually model a business properly.
Why this project works
Every FP&A role assumes I understand the connection between revenue, costs, and cash. But assumption is not proof. A model is proof.
A good financial model shows that I understand:
- How operational drivers flow into revenue
- How cost behavior affects profitability
- How the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement interact
- How changes in assumptions impact outputs
Very few portfolios actually include this kind of evidence. That is exactly why it matters.
What makes the model portfolio worthy
I do not need to overcomplicate this. I need a model that is clean, logical, and easy to follow. The structure should make sense. Assumptions should be separated from calculations. Outputs should be easy to interpret.
If I am using a driver based model, it should clearly show the business logic behind the forecast. If I am building a three statement model, it should demonstrate that I understand how cash really moves through the business.
Project 2: Create a 13 week cash flow forecast
This is one of the most underrated projects I can include.
A 13 week cash flow forecast should be built with:
- Thirteen weekly buckets
- Cash inflows
- Cash outflows
- Closing cash balance
Why this project works
Everyone talks about cash. Very few people have actually built a short term cash forecast.
When money is tight, leadership does not start by asking for a polished annual model. The first question is usually about cash. How much is coming in? What is going out? What does the next few weeks look like?
If I can show a 13 week cash flow forecast in my portfolio, I immediately look closer to the business. I look like someone who understands what matters when pressure is real.
Why it stands out in FP&A hiring
Many FP&A analysts spend time on monthly reporting and annual planning, but fewer get hands on exposure to near term liquidity management. That makes this project powerful. It signals practical judgment, not just spreadsheet ability.
It also shows that I understand:
- Working capital timing
- Weekly cash movements
- Operational cash pressure points
- The importance of closing balance visibility
Project 3: Prepare a budget presentation
Not a budget file. A budget presentation.
This is an important distinction. Anyone can fill in a template. That does not mean they can present a budget in a way leadership can understand and act on.
Why this project works
A budget presentation shows that I can move beyond raw numbers and tell the story behind them.
That means I can explain:
- What the budget is assuming
- What changed from the prior year or prior plan
- Which areas are driving growth or pressure
- What risks and opportunities matter most
This is the kind of skill that does more than help me get hired. It is the kind of skill that gets noticed internally and leads to bigger responsibility.
What to include in the deck
The presentation should feel like something I would actually take into a leadership meeting. That means it should not just be tables pasted into slides. It should have a clear message, a logical flow, and business context.
The point is to prove that I can translate finance into a decision making conversation.
Project 4: Build an interactive CFO dashboard
This can be built in Excel or Power BI. Either is fine.
Out of all five projects, this is often the most visual one. That matters because it may become the first piece someone opens.
Why this project works
A clean dashboard with the right metrics says more in five seconds than a two page CV ever can.
If the dashboard is well designed, it instantly communicates that I understand:
- What metrics a CFO actually cares about
- How to organize information for quick decision making
- How to make reporting interactive and useful
- How to present data clearly without clutter
If I skip this piece, I may be skipping my best chance at making a strong first impression.
What a strong CFO dashboard should do
The keyword here is interactive. I want the dashboard to help someone explore performance, not just stare at static charts.
It should focus on business critical KPIs and present them clearly. The value is not in making it flashy. The value is in making it useful, intuitive, and executive friendly.
Project 5: Include one strong piece of FP&A analysis
This final project is where I prove I can think, not just build.
I only need one sharp analysis, as long as it is relevant to FP&A. Good examples include:
- Price volume mix analysis
- Cohort analysis
- Scenario analysis
Why this project works
A model shows I can construct something. Analysis shows I can interpret something.
This is the piece that proves I do not just produce numbers. I can find the story inside them. I can identify what changed, why it changed, and what it means.
One strong analytical project can carry an entire portfolio because it demonstrates judgment, curiosity, and business thinking. Those qualities are hard to fake and easy to notice.
What makes an analysis strong
The best analysis is not the most complicated one. It is the one with a clear business question, a structured method, and a useful conclusion.
If I include this project, I should make sure the takeaway is obvious. The analysis should lead somewhere. It should help explain performance, risk, or decision options.
The five FP&A portfolio projects at a glance
- Financial model
- 13 week cash flow forecast
- Budget presentation
- Interactive CFO dashboard
- One strong piece of FP&A analysis
If I build these well, I am no longer just claiming I can do FP&A work. I am demonstrating it.

FAQ’s
Q1 How I would share an FP&A portfolio?
I would keep it simple.
I do not need a personal website. I do not need anything fancy. I can put everything into one Google Drive folder and share the folder link.
That folder can contain:
- The financial model
- The cash flow forecast
- The budget presentation
- The dashboard
- The analysis file
The important part is to set access to view only. That is enough. Clean, practical, and easy to open.
Q2 Do I need an FP&A job before I can build a portfolio?
No.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see. I do not need to wait for an FP&A role to start creating evidence of FP&A capability.
If I do not have company data, I can use a listed company and pull numbers from its annual report. In many cases, this looks more credible than completely invented figures because the source is real and familiar.
Another option is to generate dummy data with AI and use that to create the project.
The key idea is simple. I can start now with available information. I do not need permission to build proof of skill.
Q3 How many projects do I really need?
I do not need all five on day one.
I can start with one solid project and keep building from there. Two or three strong projects are already enough to create a good impression if they are built well.
The real rule here is straightforward:
Quality beats quantity.
A rushed portfolio with five weak files is far less useful than a focused portfolio with two excellent ones.
Q4 What makes an FP&A portfolio memorable
A memorable portfolio does three things:
- It proves technical skill
- It shows business understanding
- It communicates clearly
That is why these five projects work so well together. They cover the core dimensions of FP&A.
- The financial model proves I can build
- The cash flow forecast proves I understand liquidity and operational reality
- The budget presentation proves I can communicate with leadership
- The CFO dashboard proves I can present data visually and effectively
- The analysis project proves I can think critically
That combination is powerful because it mirrors what strong FP&A professionals actually do on the job.
